Department of Japanese Studies

Frontline of "Japanese Studies",
Welcome to Hanyang University's Department of Japanese Studies.

Department

Hanyang University's Department of Japanese Studies has produced a great number of talented people with the goal of cultivating global talents with a flexible perspective on Japanese society and culture. Japan is a country with influence in many fields, including culture, economy, politics, and diplomacy, all over the world. Expanding our understanding of Japan, which is also our closest neighbor, is the first step toward working as a global citizen and the process of increasing our life options.

Our Japanese department operates a systematic educational curriculum that focuses on Japan and the rest of the world. For example, a Korean university has been operating a local semester program in Japan since 2006, sending about 20 students to Tokai University in Japan every semester. Through this program, Japanese students can learn Japanese and experience Japanese culture there. Tokai University's local semester program is used as a very important foothold for students to knock on the door of the Japanese job market. In addition, at the department level, we are supporting local companies in Japan to get a job through working holidays and internships.

Hanyang University Graduate School of Japanese Studies has been selected by the government's Graduate Student Scholarship Support Project, 'Brain Korea 21 (BK21)', and has been recognized for its excellence in research and education since the first phase of the project in 1999. It was newly selected for the 'BK21FOUR' in 2020, and this is the first department in the field of Japanese Studies to be selected for all of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phases of the BK project. Through this 'BK project', our graduate school is expanding the international academic human network and actively engaged in international exchanges. In addition, through this project, Hanyang University's Japanese department provides an opportunity for graduate students with master's and doctoral programs to participate in international academic seminars every year. As such, Hanyang University's Japanese department is striving to cultivate global talents. In addition, professors and instructors who are recognized for their educational and research capabilities are helping students achieve their dreams.

With exchanges between countries around the world freed up again after the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for exchanges between Korea and Japan is also increasing. If you take advantage of this situation actively, you will be able to expand your own perspective and life opportunities. Now is the time when the global pandemic is stabilized. I hope you will get an opportunity to play as a global talent in our Japanese department and as a "cross-breed" between Korea and Japan.

Student Societies

  • Mi Roo : Mi Roo is a video dubbing society of the Department of Japanese Studies. Each semester, a work is selected to conduct dubbing activities and hold a screening event to provide an opportunity to showcase the completed work in front of classmates. Students can learn how to translate Japanese according to situations through work translation activities, and learn how to use an accurate Japanese accent and pronunciation by participating in dubbing. Also, through the process of participating in the above activities, students can improve their Japanese language skills.
  • STUDY ROOM : The STUDY ROOM is a study conference of the Japanese department of the International Cultural University. As a Japanese student, I focus on the JLPT, which is essential, and the TOEIC, which is the most basic English language test. Basically, my goal is to study during the semester and take the exam scheduled after the end of the semester. And by having weekly study meetings, I aim to achieve efficient learning by unifying the learning method and sharing the learning materials. After achieving the primary goals of JLPT and TOEIC, I can also try additional foreign language tests such as OPIC, TOEIC Speaking, and JPT.
