“Department of Genre Technology and Subculture,”
leading the modern cultural industries through convergent research and creation.
We live in an era where traditional culture based on language, history, class, region, and religion are being increasing highlighted through rapid changes in media and telecommunication, and they are having greater impacts on the world economy. This department studies the realities of contemporary cultural phenomena, production, and consumption, differentiated from existing literature research and popular culture research. Genres such as web novels, webtoons, and games were previously enjoyed by a relatively small audience, but today but these areas are conspiciousin publishing, dramas, and movies. The department seeks to help students understand this popularity through the deconstruction of traditional methods and artistic values.
Therefore, the Department of Genre Technology and Subculture is open to students of all majors, including those in the humanities, natural sciences, and engineering, who are interested in criticism and research as well as the creation of genre art. The department is open to those who are interested in interdisciplinary integration and are open to perspectives outside theory-oriented research.
“The Department of Genre Technology and Subculture aims to nurture experts in genre culture while studying the process of production and consumption of this new culture that is currently growing at rapid pace and spreading worldwide. Students of the department actively participate in the answer-seeking process. Unlike other departments that specialize in web novels, webtoons, and games, the Department of Genre Technology and Subculture focuses on the entirety of modern popular culture through a wide range of media and genre, and aims to have students actively participate in the production process. For convenience for those already in the field or those with other occupations, all classes are held on Saturdays.
