Department

​Since the graduate school of this school opened a master's program in 1983 and a doctoral program in 1992, it has been cultivating Japanese study professionals required by society.

In particular, through the BK21 FORUR Educational Research Project, we are focusing on fostering practical Japanese researchers by providing scholarships and international academic research opportunities to graduate students with master's and doctoral programs (including master's and doctoral integration courses). In addition, by utilizing the BK project, we are actively engaged in international exchanges by expanding the international academic and human network.

We hope that you will have the opportunity to grow into a professional Japanese study workforce and play internationally with the excellent faculty of Hanyang University's Department of Japanese Language and Culture.

Educational Goal and Specialization Strategy

- The Graduate School of Japanese Language and Culture aims to nurture professionals who can be active in academia and other related fields, and can conduct in-depth research on Japanese language studies, Japanese politics, diplomacy, and Japanese culture.

Introducing BK21

The Graduate School of Japanese Language and Culture was selected for the 1st stage of the BK21 project in 1999, the 2nd stage of the BK21 project in 2006, the BK21+ project in 2013, and the BK21 FOUR in 2020, and is currently operating 「Japanese Studies Education Research Team for Creation of Local Culture and Establishment of Methodology for Humanities Activities」.

The department is the first in the field of Japanese studies to be selected for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stages of the BK project. Currently, graduate students in the master's and doctoral courses are selected as BK scholarship students every year to participate in related research centered on overseas academic seminars.

  • What is the BK21 project?

    The BRAIN KOREA (BK) 21 project is government-sponsored to nurture key high-level human resources who will lead Korea in the next 10 years. The Department of Japanese Language and Culture at Hanyang University was selected as a core humanities and social science field and has been receiving support since September 2013. The BK21 project team serves as a world-class knowledge production base in the field of Japanese Studies research, promoting the cultivation of internationally competitive and creative research personnel.

    01. Fostering Japanese experts needed to realize peace and harmonyin the East Asian community through research on Japanese literature, language, and culture

    02. Conducting Japanese research from Korea with a global perspective in connection with overseas research institutes through networking

  • BK21 PLUS Scholarship

    01. Graduate students in master's and doctoral programs receive tuition (full or partial) reduction or exemption through scholarship assistance.

    02. Scholarships of more than W700,000 a month for master's students and W1.3 million a month for doctoral students when participating in BK21 research (more than W1 million a month for doctoral students)
